The intent of the air filter is to filter dust, insect, debris, etc. The amount of air fed to the engine is regulated by the butterfly valve which works in tandem with the fuel throttle control valve. The more you press on the gas pedal the more the butterfly valve opens which in turn feeds Itsounds dumb but systems like VW that have big buttons and relatively simple menus are the way to go. Alfa specifically designed their system to be simple. Most other competitors like MB and Audi have weird gimmicks like touchpads and whatnot and honestly that's super distracting when you're trying to drive. Thisis the norm.
